Helensville & Kaukapakapa residents against the proposed Genesis Energy gas fired power station. RESIDENTS AGAINST GENESIS ENERGY SITE - FACT SHEET #1 Genesis Energy plan to build a 360 mega watt gas-fired power station on the corner of SH16 and Inland Road. The power station is to be modular in design and will: Cover up to 12.5 acres of land
Be highly visible from all angles
Operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week
Be flood lit at night
Be security fenced
Create a constant noise from the turbines
Emit pollutants L No Employment Benefits for local people! Genesis can operate the power station remotely, or may have 4 or 5 staff operate it L Gas is a limited resource! When the gas runs out, Genesis intend using imported LNG. Therefore our retail electricity prices will be subject to controls dictated by offshore price fluctuations, (as petrol is now.) L Producing electricity using gas is inefficient! Converting gas into electricity wastes 45 – 50% of the gas, a non re-newable fossil fuel, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Why convert gas to electricity to run hot water, cookers and home heating, when it can be used directly? L The Government is committed to renewable generation and say it must be our number one long term target! Who is listening to us??? L No amount of new electricity generation will alter the power outages along the 142km line that heads north from the substation in Helensville. These power cuts are caused by age of the line, trees, possums, car crashes etc… L Easements for the gas pipeline, north from New Plymouth, will be trebled in size to allow for high pressure pipeline. This will mean more farmland torn up L The power station has a limited life expectancy, will we be left with the legacy of a derelict structure. Is Genesis Energy just using us as a cash cow for their shareholders?
